About

I’ve lived in San Francisco almost half of my life and much of that time has been spend wandering around with my camera, with an eye on the streets. I love to see the spirit of San Francisco experienced through her entertaining, unpredictable and beautiful streets and am fascinated by the intersection of private lives in the public sphere. I am an avid pedestrian, permaculture geek and longtime San Francisco resident who commutes on a bicycle. And I take any excuse to wander sidewalks near and far. This blog shows some of the wonder places that I’ve been able to explore, focusing on sidewalks, urban farms and gardens.

All of the writing and photographs are done by me, unless otherwise noted. To contact me directly you can email me at karlanjohnson@gmail.com. Thanks for reading!

  1. Hi,

I am researching urban farming in San Francisco and came across your site. I was wondering if you would be willing to talk with (er, email) me and share information on the subject?

I am sensing that this growing movement is in need of some organization and guidance. By that I mean, a common place all of our urban farmers can go to learn how to farm, what to do with their crops, and how to find the resources they need to be successful farmers (like a roster of trained professionals to maintain their gardens, or a list of places that sell certain seeds, etc). What I have found so far are many individuals doing great things, but I am having trouble finding one place that can provide everything I need for a successful urban farm. If I am looking for that, I imagine others are too. I’m hoping to create that resource for our community.

In your experience, does this sort of resource already exist in SF? (I haven’t found it yet if so, but I would not be surprised if it does already exist!)

    Thanks for any guidance
